CASM’s inaugural After Dark event features local Mandurah artists Emma Purkis and Alex winner discussing their individual artist journeys following tertiary graduation.
This professional development artist talk is designed for graduating and emerging artists looking to navigate the next steps in their career. In this engaging session, Emma and Alex will share their journeys from art school to starting/establishing a career, offering valuable insights on building a portfolio, networking, and finding opportunities. Attendees will gain practical tips on showcasing their work, balancing creativity with business, and overcoming common challenges faced by new artists. This talk is a unique opportunity to connect with a fellow emerging artist and gain the confidence and knowledge needed to thrive in the creative industry.
Emma Purkis is an emerging artist, graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in Fine Art in 2022. She completed a three-month artist residency at CASM in June 2024. Themes of mental health, the body and femininity are prominent in her practice, which she explores through the medium of sculpture. Emma enjoys creating contrasts between the subject matter and materials, with the intention of addressing serious and sometimes taboo subjects though more easily digestible visuals and spaces. Her sculptures are often anthropomorphic and aim to represent elements of humanity while also harnessing abstract forms. She is currently working on a project which explores the histories of mental health treatment, particularly mental health institutions in the western world and associated tales of hauntings. Her emphasis is on the importance of effective mental health treatment while reflecting on her own personal experiences and connections.
Alex Winner is a local artist, filmmaker, and musician. Winner works across mediums, including video, installation art, sound, and photography. Drawn to these mediums through his background in film production, Winner’s art practice experiments with using the projected image and physical space to examine the relationship between the two forms. Winner’s two-dimensional projections take on a three-dimensional spatial form, recontextualizing the immersive nature of the moving image. Alex is interested in community engagement with his art practice, making interactive work that encourages interaction through technology. He has recently completed art projects for Strange Festival, the 2023 Bunbury Biennale, and CASM incorporating site-specific installations. Winner was recently selected to be a part of the 2024 Perth Festival Lab.
