A duo made up of uncle and nephew from iconic Australian jazz family, the Barnards. Tony Barnard (21 string harp guitar) and Casey Golden (piano) create an eclectic musical world that draws inspiration from jazz, classical, world and folk music. Featuring compositions and improvisations from both musicians, their music is atmospheric, uplifting and surprising. They’ll be playing material from their recordings ‘Inventions’ and ’Spare Parts - Inventions II’ plus some brand new pieces.
Tony Barnard:
Guitarist Tony Barnard has had an illustrious career spanning over 40 years. He has performed with a wide range of artists the world over, including The Australian Chamber Orchestra, The BBC Concert Orchestra, The Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra, The Dubai Philharmonic strings, Barney Kessel, Earl Hines, Nat Adderley, Nancy Wilson and Dave Liebman among many others. Based in London for over 20 years, Tony was the only ever resident guitarist at the world-famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, playing with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra for some 10 years.
Before leaving for the UK, Tony had appeared at most of Australia's jazz festivals, accompanied visiting jazz and international jazz and show-biz stars, won 'best guitarist' polls, formed Australia's first 5-guitar big band 'Interplay', led his own bands, and worked as musical director on cruise ships, taught guitar and did workshops in over 30 schools. Tony holds a BA (Hons) in Music and Humanities.
Tony won the international song writing competition (jazz category) in 2013 with his piece “Bunyips” from his Australian suite. Tony is also one of a handful of people worldwide, who has mastered the 21 string Harp Guitar. Tony does workshops and concerts in the USA on Harp Guitar annually. He also plays 8 string ukelele and harp ukelele. Tony is endorsed by Emerald Guitars
Casey Golden:
Casey Golden is a forward-thinking musician based in Sydney. Described as ‘a brilliant improviser with a highly developed melodic sensibility’ (The Australian) and ‘a pianist of sheer class’ (Jazzwise), he’s been involved in a wide range of original music ranging from jazz/improvised projects to electronic, pop and film music.
Currently, Casey is a member/co-leader of improvising trio States of Chaos and one half of future-electronic/production duo This Week in the Universe. Along with his these projects, Golden also releases music as a solo artist, always ‘placing honesty, passion, originality and personal experience at the centre of his art’ (Fine Music Magazine). He released his debut solo piano album Smaller Worlds in 2022 and synthesiser/bass/drums trio recording Orbits in 2023.
A musician with a strong personal vision and an expressive yet grounded approach to his instrument, Casey maintains a multitude of ongoing performing, recording and touring credits as a pianist, keys player, composer and producer. He has been a finalist in the National Jazz Awards, the Freedman Fellowship, the APRA Professional Development Awards and the Bell Awards.
