About this Event
Hikers unite!! ... Hey dope souls! We’re back for the 2025 hike season and kicking off Black History Month where history, nature, and community collide—Cascade Springs Nature Preserve. This 2.5-mile easy loop is more than just a trail; as an Atlanta native, it’s a journey through a story that’s shaped our city and our people.
Nestled in Atlanta’s historic Cascade Heights, this preserve is a hidden oasis with waterfalls, lush forests, and remnants of the Battle of Utoy Creek, a Civil War fight that left its mark on this land. But there’s so much more to this space than meets the eye!
This hike is geared to be more than just a walk—it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and connection. Whether this is your first hike with Down2Earth or you’ve been rocking with us for a while, you’ll leave feeling inspired and recharged.
Let’s start the month of February off right—walking through history, honoring our roots, and embracing the beauty right here around us and within arms reach.
Trail Dets:
• Distance: 2.5 mile loop (rated easy in difficulty)
• Elevation Gain: 160 feet
• Pace: We’ll keep a steady but manageable pace, taking breaks to soak in the surroundings and recharge. We'll pause at the waterfall for some intentional moments of reflection.
What to Bring:
Water, hydration drinks, snacks, and a light lunch. Let’s keep ourselves energized while being mindful of sustainability!
Mindful Tips:
- Be sure to wear sturdy footwear with good grip and support.
- Pack a lunch to enjoy and fuel up while taking in the spectacular views.
- It can be chilly when we stop, so layer up and bring something warm for when we stop, before looping back around.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out what you bring on the trails.
- Leave nature as you find it - leaving rocks, leaves, trees, mushrooms, and flowers on the trail.
- Be respectful of others, wildlife, and nature!
- Take in the sounds of cascading water and reflect on the history of this space.
- Pause for a moment of gratitude near the waterfall.
Fun Facts:
- After the Civil War, the springs became known for their healing waters, attracting visitors seeking peace and renewal.
- In the 1970s, Black residents rallied to save this land from urbanization, transforming it into the preserve we love today. Talk about the power of community!
- Cascade Heights has long been a hub for Atlanta’s Black excellence—home to thriving businesses, leaders, and history-makers. Walking these trails connects us to that legacy.
I'm so excited to kick off Black History Month & our first group hike of the season, on this trail with you!
