2:00 to 5:00 PM | Presentation begins at 2:30
Winged skulls. Soaring cherubs. Willows and urns. New England's gravestones changed dramatically between the 17th and early 19th centuries, and every carving tells you something about how people understood death, faith, and memory.
Join us for an afternoon with Derek Strahan as he traces the evolution of New England gravestone art, shows how styles varied by region, and introduces the stonecutters behind them, including the carvers who worked right here in Wilbraham.
Following the presentation, Derek leads a guided walking tour of Adams Cemetery, Wilbraham's oldest burial ground.
About the speaker
Derek Strahan is the managing editor and primary author of Lost New England, host of the Western Mass History podcast, and author of Lost Springfield, Massachusetts, and New England Then and Now. He specializes in early New England gravestone carvers and runs the Gravestones of New England pages on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
All are welcome. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the cemetery walk.
