The Tampa Jazz Club’s new season of Sunday concerts continues with Carter Plays Coltrane, featuring the dynamic JEREMY CARTER QUARTET in performance at HCC/Ybor City’s Mainstage Theatre on October 3 at 3:00. Presented as part of HCC’s Visual & Performing Arts Series, the concert celebrates the powerful legacy of John Coltrane, who was born 95 years ago this fall.
A fixture on the Bay Area jazz scene for years, JEREMY CARTER has a powerful yet intimate sound, perfectly suited for the music of Coltrane, whom he’s described as “very influential on my development, as a saxophonist and as a person.” Jeremy’s recent projects have included a Michael Brecker Tribute and his Soul of Jazz project; in addition, he’s heard regularly with the other top-echelon players in the area. For Carter Plays Coltrane, he’s assembled a powerhouse group with ANTHONY ALDISSI, piano; JOE PORTER, bass; and PAUL GAVIN, drums.
Born 95 years ago this September, John Coltrane shot like a meteor across the jazz landscape in the decade prior to his passing in 1967, and we’ve been learning from him ever since. Looking ahead to this performance, Jeremy Carter noted “it’s such a pleasure digging into this music – it’s challenging but so logical, and it’s timeless.” As a follow-up to the ‘Bird Lives’ birthday concert that opened the Tampa Jazz Club/HCC season, we look forward to Carter Plays Coltrane in the beautiful Mainstage Theatre – see you there!
