Cartas De Cuba

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Teatro Décimo Piso at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are pleased to announce their upcoming production of María Irene Fornés’s Cartas de Cuba (Letters from Cuba), directed by Paola S. Hernández and Sabina Madrid-Malloy.

Inspired by the playwright’s own correspondence with her brother spanning three decades, Fornés’s final play of her career explores familial bonds, separation, and (dis)connection across space and time. The lyrical structure and narrative of the play revolve around the epistolary communication between siblings Fran and Luís after Fran immigrates to New York City from Cuba. The oneiric scenes and structure of the play seamlessly blend the artistic, the poetic, and the quotidian in Fornés’s piece.

Performances will take place on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at the Play Circle Theatre located in Memorial Union at UW-Madison, 800 Langdon Street. Doors will open 6:30 pm, and performances will begin at 7:00pm. The play runs approximately one hour. Tickets are free, but we expect the performances to sell out and recommend reserving tickets early.

This production will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

El Departamento de Español y Portugués y Teatro Décimo Piso de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison tienen el placer de anunciar la puesta en escena de la obra, Cartas de Cuba, de María Irene Fornés, dirigida por Paola S. Hernández y Sabina Madrid-Malloy.

Esta última obra escrita por Fornés se inspira en la correspondencia entre ella y su hermano a lo largo de tres décadas. Cartas de Cuba explora las relaciones familiares y la separación entre tiempo y espacio. La estructura y la trama se centran en la comunicación epistolar entre los hermanos, Fran y Luis, una vez que Fran emigra de Cuba a la Ciudad de Nueva York. Las escenas oníricas y la estructura de la obra se funden con lo artístico, lo poético y la vida cotidiana.

Las funciones serán el viernes, 1 de mayo y el sábado, 2 de mayo en el Play Circle Theatre, en el edificio Memorial Union de UW-Madison, 800 Langdon Street. Las puertas abren a las 6:30pm, y la obra comenzará a las 7:00 pm. La duración de la obra es de apróximadamente una hora. Los boletos son gratuitos. Sin embargo, recomendamos reservar los boletos con antelación.
