Join us for an evening of film, poetry, music, and conversation as we venture into a territory of the spirit. Far back through the shining realms of the soul, in a strangely familiar place that’s always just around the corner, New York City overlaps with Latin America, or Latin America overlaps with New York City. Over these invisible coordinates, the mind opens up toward worlds untold, and the eye scans a new song. We invite you to board our ancient train and ride into a flickering landscape of connections.

We will screen a short film by Lucas Manuel-Scheibe, listen to poems performed by Sheila Maldonado and Urayoán Noel, and hear an original composition played by Evan Francis and Thomas Hutchings. The program will conclude with a conversation among our participants on common themes, moderated by Erik Noonan.

Performers:

has been a professional musician since 1998, composing and performing on saxophone, flute, clarinet, congas, bongo and singing.

is a renowned saxophonist, producer, and podcast host based in New York City.

is the author of the poetry collections that's what you get and one-bedroom solo.

is a Half-Filipino, Half-German independent filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. A child of diaspora, he creates across narrative and documentary forms between Hawai’i and New York, and is interested in stories about origin and transit, the way the body holds cultural memory, and how storytelling can liberate.

is a writer, translator, and performer from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Noel is the author of ten books in English and Spanish, including the critical study In Visible Movement: Nuyorican Poetry from the Sixties to Slam; and the poetry collections Boringkén, Hi-Density Politics, and Transversal.

is the author of the poetry collections Stances
and Haiku d’Etat, and his poems appear in the anthology Cross Strokes. He is currently Managing Director at JackLeg Press and Assistant Dean at the San Francisco Film School.
