What is a charm bag?
It's one of the oldest and quietest traditions in folk history: a small pouch filled with herbs, carried close to the body or tucked somewhere meaningful. For generations, families across Europe, Appalachia, and the American South were tucking herb filled pouches into pockets, hanging them by doorways, and slipping them beneath pillows. Each one told a story: a grandmother's care passed down, a traveler's protection for the road ahead, a small bundle of hope stitched into cloth.
Charm bags were once a common, everyday practice, passed down at kitchen tables the way a recipe might be. Over time, though, that tradition became quieter, tucked further from view, until it was nearly forgotten outside of folklore collections and family stories.
We're bringing it back into the light this September.
In this 90-minute, hands-on class, we'll explore what charm bags are, the folk history behind them, and the herbs traditionally used. You'll learn the lore behind several herbs, choose the ones that speak to you, and assemble your own charm bag to take home.
We'll also talk about simple ways to incorporate one into daily life, whether hung by a door, tucked into a bag, or kept somewhere quietly meaningful to you.
No experience needed. Just come curious.
Community is medicine for the soul, and we can't wait to make this one with you.
