A.R. Penck was a German Neo-Expressionist whose paintings of figures
and symbols use a vocabulary of pictographs that the artist described as
his visual building blocks. The images in the Lausanne Suite (1990) of
lithographs are typical of them and includes a symbolic representation of
tiger that Penck adopted from Jungian analysis, where dreams of Tigers
were seen as an indicator of unlimited energy.
The Lausanne Suite was a set of six lithographs published in an edition of
70, and summed up the artist’s previous decade’s two-dimensional work.
His works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The
Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C., the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Städel Museum in
Frankfurt.
