About Mike Gminski:

Event Photos

Born August 3, 1959, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mike Gminski grew up in Monroe, Connecticut, where his early love for basketball became the foundation of an extraordinary athletic career. A standout at Masuk High School, Mike graduated in just three years at the age of 16 with honors. On the court, he was a three-year varsity player, two-time First Team All-State selection, and a junior-year phenom who averaged a state-record 41 points per game—a record that still stands today.

His early excellence earned him induction into the Fairfield County and New England Basketball Halls of Fame, as well as recognition among the Top 50 Connecticut Athletes of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated. At Duke University (1976–1980), Mike became one of the most decorated players in school history. A four-year starter and team leader, he graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in History and left as Duke’s all-time leader in career points, rebounds, and blocked shots. His accolades include being named ACC Co-Rookie of the Year (1977), three-time First Team All-ACC selection, 1979 ACC Player of the Year, three-time All-American, and three-time Academic All-American First Team honoree. He was later inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame, the Academic All-America Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, with his #43 jersey retired by Duke University.

Selected 7th overall in the first round of the 1980 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets, Mike went on to a 14-year professional career with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, and Milwaukee Bucks. He retired in 1994 with over 11,000 career points, 6,500 rebounds, and 1,000 blocked shots.

Following his playing career, Mike transitioned into broadcasting, serving as the lead TV and radio analyst for the Charlotte Hornets for eight years and later becoming one of the most respected voices in college basketball broadcasting. Since 2002, he has worked as a college basketball analyst with Raycom Sports, Fox Sports, and CBS, including Fox Sunday Night Hoops and CBS College Basketball. Mike has also dedicated significant time to community service. He served on the Duke Children’s Hospital Board (1997–2009), including eight years as Chairman, and on the Duke Hospital Board of Visitors (2010–2014). Today, Mike continues his legacy of leadership, service, and connection as a Recovery Advocate and Community Ambassador for Sana House and the Sana Recovery Foundation in Charlotte, North Carolina. Through his work with Sana, Mike mentors men in early recovery, speaks to families about healing and hope, and helps bridge the gap between athletics, community, and mental health awareness. His authentic voice, personal experience, and unwavering commitment to service have made him an integral part of Sana’s mission to build a compassionate recovery community.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with fellow alumni and recovery advocates in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Seating is limited to 50 guests. Early RSVP is encouraged.
