---- What is Carolina Shag? ? ----
“The Carolina shag is a partner dance done primarily to beach music (100-130+ beats per minute in 4/4 time signature). Today, the shag is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions.
The basic step is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot.
The dance often bears only the faintest resemblance to other dances that share the "shag" designation.
The term "Carolina shag" is thought to have originated along the Atlantic Ocean in Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina during the 1940s.”

—— ✨ Instructors ✨ ——
-- Ashley Cohen Conner --
Ashley was born and raised in Arizona, and first stepped foot into a dance studio when she was 5 years old. She started social dancing in 2015 with her sister, Sydney, who she later went on to place with at the International Lindy Hop Championships in 2017. Ashley and Sydney were also California Swing Dance junior champions in 2016 and 2017.
Shortly after this, Ashley was introduced to Carolina Shag during SwingDanceVegas’s Tricks & Treats Weekend. Since then, she has dedicated much of her time learning about the history, important figures, music, and technique of Carolina Shag.
-- Jacob Spinney --
Known by his friends as "Spinney," Jacob Spinney has been obsessed with swing dancing for well over a decade. Achieving titles such as National Jitterbug Champion, Arizona Swing Dance Champion, Arizona Balboa Champion, and California Balboa Classic Champion, Spinney’s love for swing dancing has helped him create a unique style focused on creativity and expressiveness.
Spinney enjoys sharing his love for swing dancing, doing slides, and being a goofball. He drinks a Roy Rogers, easy on the ice, extra cherries.
-- Nick Whorley --
Nick Whorley, non-discriminant lover of shag dances, and unquestionable socializer, fell in love with swing at the Mercury Café in Denver, CO under the string lighting and began dancing lindy hop and balboa for a number of years. Lately, shag has nudged its way back into his every waking thought. He’s performed on a handful of teams, from the Mercury Retros, Quicksilvers, Phoenix Bomb Squad, and a number of one-off routines.
Local to Phoenix, AZ these days, he complains about the heat (which he is begrudgingly adjusting to), and then sings praises about the community members he has found in the desert. In the valley area, you’ll catch him teaching Carolina Shag (yes, Ashley won the war), lindy hop, jazz routines, and pretty much anything he might find interesting in the world of dance. He is an aerial enthusiast who loves to send his flyer partners through the sky. He takes particular care to bring them back to the ground, feet first.
