Andrew Carnegie’s pipe organ legacy will be the topic of the Sangamon County Historical Society program at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 21 at the City of Springfield’s Lincoln Library, Carnegie Room North, 326 South Seventh St. The event is free and open to the public.
It may surprise you that philanthropist Andrew Carnegie has not only a legacy of libraries across the United States, but that he also loved music and awarded matching grants for groups to build pipe organs in more than 8,000 communities around the world, including 207 in Illinois.
History sleuth and professional organist Paula Pugh Romanaux, Ph.D., will present a Power Point program about these organs in a presentation for the Sangamon County Historical Society.
Romanaux has studied and performed on pipe organs throughout Europe and the U.S. as well as in central Illinois for 45 years after getting her start in Cass County on an organ purchased by a matching grant from the Carnegie Foundation. She was a professor of music and organ at Kalamazoo College for 25 years and recently served as organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield. Romanaux earned her doctor of philosophy and doctor of musical arts degrees in Europe, and her bachelor of arts and bachelor of music degrees at MacMurray College.
