Carnal Autopoiesis: Private View
About this Event
Jonathan Armour, Mandeep Dillon, Jamie Gallagher and Kika Sroka-Miller
Carnal Autopoiesis brings together the work of four contemporary artists whose self-generating processes, methods and practices explore the body as the primary site for a grounding between the material and immaterial. The exhibition probes ways in which images and forms emerge from artistic material and questions how that process of emergence differs when we consider the artist’s body as material.
‘Autopoiesis’, a concept introduced in 1972 describing self-generation in cellular biology, has since become a prominent idea in systems theory, cybernetics and digital culture.
Through painting, sculpture, digital art and writing, the works in this show produce varied visual languages and aesthetics but share a commonality in their consideration of embodiment and artwork. Using autopoiesis as an underpinning, the artists explore themes of sensation, chaos, unpredictability, legibility and meaning.
Exhibition open from Wednesday 9 – Sunday 20 September 2026.
Opening quote: Humberto Maturana, biologist, philosopher and creator of the term autopoiesis
