Carmen Staaf and Sounding Line explore links between compositions by Mary Lou Williams and well-known pieces by Thelonious Monk, who was mentored by Williams along with many of his bebop-era contemporaries. Featuring Bay Area stalwarts Ben Goldberg (clarinet), Dillon Vado (vibes) and Hamir Atwal (drums), the band explores the buoyant rhythms, mysterious harmonic movement and angular melodic lines in music by Monk and Williams as well as originals.
