About this Event
Join us for an inspiring evening at SNAP Gallery with "Caribou Tracks and Prints: Art and Conservation", where your creativity meets commitment to nature conservation in Alberta.
You will have the opportunity to create your own linocut print, which you’ll be able to take home with you, with supplies and direction from SNAP staff while CPAWS staff will host programming on caribou conservation in Alberta.
About Caribou in Alberta:
Woodland caribou are one of Alberta’s most iconic species, but decades of intense disturbance in the boreal forest has driven their numbers dangerously low, telling us that the overall health of the boreal forest is in decline. Some herds have experienced 80% reductions in their population size with some facing extirpation – meaning they are at risk of being lost from that area forever!
Drivers of Caribou decline include:
· Roads and Highways
· Loss of Mature Forests and Wetlands
· Introduced Industrial Features
· Wolf and Predator Population Increases
CPAWS Northern Alberta focuses on four key actions:
· Ensure at least 50% of the Boreal forest is protected from industrial use and includes critical habitat for woodland caribou;
· Negotiate with forestry companies and other industry partners to protect more caribou habitat from industrial disturbance and responsibly manage within caribou ranges
· Represent the environmental interests in multistakeholder driven land use plans developed by the Government of Alberta including:
- Ensuring the commitment to restoration of disturbed caribou habitat so it can become suitable caribou habitat in the future
- Advocating for caribou recovery plans prioritize involvement from Indigenous communities
Enjoy a night of art, meaningful discussions, and the chance to contribute to a cause that’s close to our hearts. All proceeds from the event will be shared between the SNAP gallery and the CPAWS Northern Alberta Chapter.
Don't miss this opportunity to connect within the community through art and conservation.
