Caribbean Folk Dance Workshop with Nzinga Dance | The Georgian House

Join Nzinga Dance as they lead you through an active workshop on traditional Caribbean folk dance. Specifically, they’ll be teaching and performing the bèlè dance, which developed mainly in the Eastern Caribbean as resistance and ‘response of the enslaved’, with accents of Jamaican Kumina dance, which is related to themes of women’s fertility and justice.

Learn about the meaning and history of the dance styles and explore the Caribbean connections within The Georgian House's collection.

This workshop is part of a broader set of activities organised by the National Trust for Scotland and Lisa Williams (Founder of the Edinburgh Caribbean Association) to celebrate the dynamism of Caribbean arts and culture, whilst exploring historical connections and the complex relationship between Scotland and the Caribbean.

About Nzinga Dance

Nzinga Dance is a London-based community arts organisation, focusing on Caribbean diasporic cultural, historical, and modern dance. They create, curate, and deliver authentic cultural performing arts experiences.

Nzinga Dance have taught and performed at the Royal Festival Hall, The National Trust, The British Museum, V&A Museum, Museum of Docklands, Tate Modern, The National Gallery, Portsmouth Royal Dockyard, London Zoological Society, and many more! They regularly appear at Windrush and Black History Month events and have featured on the BBC. Performing as far afield as Ghana, Guyana, and St Lucia, they are bringing their expertise to Edinburgh.

The event will split visitors into two groups; one group will be led around the house on a guided tour while the over will learn the dance, before swapping over!
