Join us for our July meeting. We meet at 7pm and usually finsih at around 8:30 pm though we have the room until 9 pm. We usually pop to Porters for a chat afterwards. Join us at one of our regular meetings for a fascinating talk from Cindy Howells, National Museum of Wales.
J.F. Jackson - the talk of an extraordinary geologist.
Jackson (1894-1966) was born in Mold, north Wales to a poor family, and suffered ill-health for much of his life. His amazing dedication to his chosen field despite lack of schooling meant that he succeeded in becoming a renowned geologist, overcoming many obstacles along the way. This talk reveals his family background, jobs, geological travels, failures and successes. As an ex-member of staff from the National Museum, his story has always fascinated me, and he's become somewhat of a hero of mine. His story is illustrated with photos, historical postcards and images of the many fossils and rocks he collected for the museum from over 50 years of collecting.
Our speaker ๐๐ฝ
I'm Cindy Howells and currently work at the National Museum of Wales where I've been for over 40 years. I look after the fossil collections with day to day care, paperwork, acquisitions, loans, exhibitions, research etc. I have carried out research into the history of the collections as well as local geology and fossils, including several dinosaurs and other animals. I'm currently President of the South Wales Geologists' Association and also on the committee of the Geological Collections Group - an international organisation. In my spare time I'm a keen bird-watcher and photographer as well as belonging to several choirs.
