It's not too late to help save the planet. Carbon Literacy Training will give you the knowledge and confidence to make a difference, both in your personal life and at your museum. Join this course offered to South East and London museums to be supported on your journey to climate action with like-minded museum colleagues.

Carbon Literacy is a term used to describe an awareness of climate change, and the climate impacts of mankind’s everyday actions. Carbon Literacy is the knowledge and capacity required to create a positive shift in how mankind lives, works and behaves in response to climate change.

This Carbon Literacy course uses the Museums’ Carbon Literacy Toolkit and is comprised of 4 modules. Participants will need to successfully complete all 4 modules in order to receive a certificate of Carbon Literacy from the Carbon Literacy Project.

This course will cover the science and facts about climate change; the impacts of climate change, equity, climate justice and vulnerability; the role of museums in tackling the climate crisis and green recovery; carbon budgets; UK and international climate policy; carbon footprints.

You will learn about the language of climate change and gain the confidence to share your knowledge with others. You will commit to positive changes you can make in your world, at home and at work. You will develop actions you can implement at your museum using the Carbon Literacy Project’s accessible framework: this might address how your collections, buildings or programmes can be more sustainable, advocacy for greater climate change awareness or how to tackle issues around climate responsibility with audiences.

Module 1: Duration 1hr 30mins, self-guided to be completed independently in the week before your course start date.

This course aims to empower everyone, no matter what role or level you are at in your organisation we can all make a difference.

If someone from your museum has previously attended Carbon Literacy Training, you are also welcome to attend.

By the end of this course you will:

• Have a good basic understanding of climate change science and facts
• Understand the impact of climate change and implications for social justice
• Be able to debate issues around climate responsibility
• Understand the role of museums in tackling the climate crisis and start to apply your knowledge to your area of work
• Gain confidence to talk about climate change and advocate for greater awareness
• Develop an action plan that you can implement in your personal life and at your museum

This course can support the following areas of Accreditation, if relevant to your role:

• 2.1 An approved forward or business plan
• 6.2 A collections care and conservation plan
• 9.1 To provide stimulating learning and discovery activities
• 3.3 Emergency planning

MDSE is funded by Arts Council England (ACE) to support museums in the South East of England within ACE’s Accreditation scheme. The South East is defined as the local authority areas of:

• Berkshire (Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor & Maidenhead and Wokingham)
• Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes

We prioritise places on our training programmes for museums which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation. ACE publishes the official lists of Accredited and Working Towards Accreditationmuseums on its website. Where possible we will make places available for museums which do not meet these criteria but the number of places will vary depending on the event format.

If you are working or volunteering for a museum in London you are eligible to attend this session.

By booking a place on to a Museum Development South East training event, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:

• That you are from a South East museum which is in Arts Council England’s Museum Accreditation Scheme. Where this is not applicable you acknowledge that MDSE will facilitate your attendance if availability permits and that you or your organisation will pay any fees which may apply.
• It is a condition of receiving this ACE funded training that the online evaluation sent to the email address provided at the point of booking is completed by the specified deadline. This deadline is in the email notification unless a paper evaluation is specifically requested and submitted on the day of the training session.
• By booking a place you agree that you will make every endeavour to attend the event and you will give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel your booking. If you repeatedly cancel your booking without sufficient notice you agree that we may exercise our right to remove you from future event bookings.
