Capturing Chinatown through Fotos and Food

Fotos & Food is a street photography walk through Chinatown that brings together two things that naturally go together: food and photography
About this Event

This isn’t a food tour with a few photos along the way. It’s a street photography walk first. We’ll spend the afternoon working the neighbourhood the way you would any good street location, paying attention to light, movement, and timing. Chinatown has a lot going on in a relatively small area, which makes it a great place to practice seeing and reacting quickly. Storefronts, sidewalks, windows, and alleys all offer different kinds of scenes, and things tend to unfold fast.

We’ll move through the neighbourhood together, stopping at a handful of local spots to shoot, observe, and eat. Along the way we’ll sample some classic Cantonese staples, including:

Steamed buns from New Town Bakery — soft, fluffy buns with a range of fillings, including barbecue pork (char siu), chicken, and vegetable options.

Har gow from Kam Wai Dim Sum — delicate dumplings with a translucent wrapper and a shrimp filling, a dim sum staple.

Char siu from Money's BBQ & Meat Shop — Cantonese style roasted pork, slightly sweet with a caramelized edge.An egg tart or pineapple bun from

The Boss Bakery & Restaurant — egg tarts have a flaky crust with a smooth custard filling, while pineapple buns are soft buns with a crisp, sugary top (no actual pineapple), served with iced lemon or milk tea.

Part of the goal is to support long standing local businesses and give you a sense of what’s in the neighbourhood.

A few notes before you sign up: the food portions are meant to introduce you to the flavours of Chinatown rather than serve as a full meal. While some stops may offer vegetarian options, we can’t guarantee vegetarian choices at every location. We also cannot accommodate specific food allergies.

All levels are welcome. Come ready to walk, shoot, and eat.

Fotos & Food Chinatown Photowalk Liability Waiver

By registering for and participating in this event, you agree to the following:

1. Voluntary Participation
I understand that my participation in the Fotos & Food Chinatown photowalk is voluntary.

2. Assumption of Risk
I acknowledge that this event involves walking through busy urban environments, including streets, sidewalks, and public spaces, as well as participating in street photography and consuming food from various vendors. I understand these activities carry inherent risks, including but not limited to:

• Slips, trips, or falls
• Traffic and pedestrian hazards
• Interactions with members of the public
• Food-related risks, including allergies, intolerances, or sensitivities

3. Food Disclaimer and Responsibility
I understand that food provided during the event consists of small portions intended to introduce participants to local flavours and is not a full meal.
I acknowledge that:

• Not all dietary restrictions or preferences can be accommodated
• Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergen-free options may be limited or unavailable at some stops
• Food is prepared by third-party vendors over whom the organizers have no control

I accept full responsibility for my food choices and any consequences, including allergic reactions or other health-related issues. I agree that the organizers are not liable for any illness, injury, or adverse reaction resulting from food consumed during the event.

4. Personal Responsibility
I accept full responsibility for my own safety, well-being, and personal property. I am responsible for managing my physical condition, awareness of surroundings, and personal decisions throughout the event.

5. Release of Liability
I release, waive, and discharge the Vancouver Street Photography Collective, event organizers, leaders, and volunteers from any and all liability, claims, demands, or causes of action arising out of or related to any loss, damage, injury, illness, or adverse reaction sustained while participating in the event, including those related to food consumption.

6. Indemnification
I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the organizers from any claims brought by third parties arising from my actions during the event.

7. Agreement
By registering for this event and/or selecting “I agree” during checkout, I confirm that I have read, understood, and agree to this waiver.
