About this Event
Sandra D. Davis is a multidisciplinary artist dedicated to the reuse of materials, experimenting with fabric, paint, paper, and repurposed furniture. A Gaithersburg resident for over 30 years, she lives with her husband and two adult sons. Since 2010, Sandra has exhibited her art in Montgomery County and nearby areas, deeply valuing community interaction.
Sandra is particularly proud of three recent projects. The first, "Why I Vote," was a co-curated exhibition celebrating the 19th Amendment Centennial with the City of Gaithersburg in 2020. The second, "What is Ours" (2022), was a curatorial project for the Women’s Caucus for Art, featuring art, a panel discussion, and poetry. The third, the "Pull Up A Chair" series, showcased in 2022 and 2024, has sparked conversations on identity, social unrest, and mental health through its two exhibitions.
Recently, Sandra has been awarded grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, recognizing her contributions to the arts and community. She also recently became the president of the national organization, Women’s Caucus for Art.
Sandra Davis is deeply committed to community engagement, using her art to spark social conversations and build connections. Through projects like "Why I Vote" (2020), she co-curated an exhibition celebrating the 19th Amendment Centennial, encouraging civic participation and dialogue about voting rights. Her "What is Ours" (2022) project brought together artists, panel discussions, and poetry to address women's issues and collective identity. The "Pull Up A Chair" series (2022, 2024) invited artists to use chairs as canvases for exploring themes like identity, social unrest, and mental health, fostering powerful community responses to societal challenges.
My photography journey spans decades and diverse genres, from corporate headshots to weddings, events, sports, fashion, and even fantasy worlds. Every shot is an opportunity to capture the beauty of everyday moments—whether it’s the infectious joy of a smile, the graceful curve of a shoulder, or the captivating glint in a subject’s eye.
When I photograph dancers, I seek to capture not just their movements but the very essence of their being. This experience becomes especially profound with African dancers; I’m not merely photographing their attire or the rhythm of their bodies—I’m capturing their souls. Each movement tells a story, and my goal is to breathe life into my images, transforming them into vibrant narratives that resonate deeply with viewers.
My passion for photography ignited in 1978 at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where I honed my craft and met my incredibly talented wife, Sandra. Together, we’ve built a life steeped in creativity and inspiration, continually motivating each other to explore new horizons.
For over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the premier photographer for Soul in Motion, an African drumming and dance troupe. This role has allowed me to immerse myself in the rhythmic energy and cultural richness of their performances, further deepening my love for photography. Each dance unfolds a narrative, and I strive to capture that essence in every frame.
My work adorns galleries across Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Boston, inspiring viewers with its stories and vibrancy. Collaborating with Sandra has been a highlight of my career; together, we blend our visions and passions to create something truly special. I’ve also designed book covers and shared my insights in various online magazines, each project an exciting new adventure.
Join me on this journey as we celebrate the moments that make life beautiful. Within every fleeting instant lies the potential to inspire and connect. Let’s illuminate the extraordinary in the everyday, and together, create a tapestry of light and life that resonates with all!
