Canvas Floater Frame 101

Prerequisites - To join this class, you will need to have taken the Woodshop 101 course at the Charlotte MakerSpace.

What you will go home with 
A handmade float frame in Walnut for a pre stretched canvas

We will provide

• Hard Maple wood for the frame and Walnut splines for a frame up to 10 inches by 10 inches
• 8 inch by 8 inch gallery-style (1.5 inches deep) unstretched canvas
• Picture frame hanging hardware
• If you already do have a stretched canvas you would like to frame, please bring it along as long as it is smaller than 10 inches by 10 inches

What you will do - In the class, you will learn how to measure your artwork and come up with a cut-list for the frame. You will use the table saw to rip wood to the right dimensions and create the rabbet profiles and cut mitres (45 degree angles) before glueing the frame. After the glue has dried, you will cut grooves for splines in the corners and glue contrasting splines to reinforce the joint.

How the class will be structured 

In the first 90 minutes of the class - You will be making the frame pieces and gluing them up into a rectangle. 

20 minute break - While the glue dries 

In the next 90 minutes of the class - You will then be cutting spline slots into the frame corners and inserting contrasting wood splines (We will use CA glue for this to speed things up). Then we will be sanding and finishing the frame with walrus oil finish. 

More Details

Class is open to ages 16 and up, though minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. The adult must purchase an additional ticket to attend the class. Guests are asked to be on time for events. If the safety briefing is missed, the guest will not be able to join the class and no refunds will be given. Any jewelry on the hands and wrist must be removed and that no loose clothing is worn. Closed-toed shoes are required. Safety goggles will be provided. If you wear prescription glasses, you may want to bring your own eye protection. Hearing protection is optional, bring your own if desired.
