Cantonese Fun Day with Hong Kong Food and Crafts

The community radio show Hong Kongology at 3CR and three Naarm-based grassroots Cantonese preservation groups - Cantopia, Little Bean Cantonese, and Story Swallow, will be running a Cantonese fun day at Shop Bao Ngoc in Brunswick on Sunday 28 April. On the day we will be offering a wide selection of original Hong Kong food and desserts, with games and activities like mahjong and palm and Chinese astrological reading designed for both Cantonese and non-Cantonese speakers (perhaps karaoke too)! There will also be a marketplace of Hong Kong-related zines, prints, books, crafts, and creative goodies. Come and have fun together regardless of what language you speak and where you are from!

Cantonese is the major language in Hong Kong, and commonly spoken in South China and minority communities across Southeast Asia, but its number of speakers has been declining and it is at risk of demise in a few decades. We would like to introduce the language to you all in Naarm on the day as a contest to the standing hegemony of English and rising influence of Mandarin, as well as to connect you to the Hong Kong culture. This day will too be an opportunity for Hong Kong people to cure their homesickness through gathering and making friends beyond their clan.

There will also be speakers and performers sharing their research or creative practice about the cultural politics of langauges spoken in the Chinese region. In China alone, there are more than 300 languages other than Mandarin still in use today. The day will also be a chance to embrace linguistic diversity and celebrate different traditions and knowledge systems that come with a language.

Proceeds will go to supporting Cantopia, Little Bean Cantonese, and Story Swallow.

到時我哋會供應唔同款式嘅香港美食同甜品，仲會有麻將、手相等遊戲同活動（可能仲有卡拉OK）畀識同唔識廣東話嘅朋友參加！

廣東話係香港主要嘅語言，亦係華南地區同東南亞少數族群中常用嘅語言，但使用者數量一直喺下降，有可能幾十年內瀕臨絕種。我哋希望喺Naarm向大家介紹呢種語言，挑戰英語同普通話嘅霸權，同想埋畀大家更加了解香港文化！呢一日亦係香港人紓解思鄉之情嘅大好時間。

活動收益將會用嚟支持「港呢啲」、‘Little Bean Cantonese’ 同「故事燕子」，佢哋都係保護同推廣廣東話嘅基層組織。
