Also known as Candlemas, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ (or the Purification of Mary) commemorates the 40th day after Jesus' birth, when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple.
Bach wrote several cantatas for this major feast, including Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin ("With peace and joy I depart," BWV 125; 1725), Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde ("Joyful time in the new covenant," BWV 83; 1724), and the rightfully popular solo cantata Ich habe genug ("I have enough," BWV 82; 1727). There is also an aria, "Bekennen will ich seinen Namen" ("I shall acknowledge His name," BWV 200; c. 1742), adapted from an aria by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel.
We ask for a donation at each session of $20 per person to cover a stipend for the music director and other expenses. But any amount is welcome, and no one is turned away.
