About this Event
About This Event
Join the FIU Symphony Orchestra, FIU Concert Choir, Encantus Voices, and Amazonia Choir for a powerful send-off concert as the orchestra prepares for its international performance in Madrid.
The program features Cantata Criolla by Antonio Estévez—one of Latin America’s most celebrated choral-orchestral works—brought to life by internationally acclaimed guest artists Juan Tomás Martínez as El Diablo and Carlos Silva as Florentino.
Following its acclaimed 2024 performance at The Wertheim, this production drew international attention and led to an invitation for the FIU Symphony Orchestra to perform at the Auditorio Nacional de la Música in Madrid on June 12, 2026. This concert serves as the final performance of the work before that international appearance.
About the Work
Cantata Criolla is a landmark of Latin American music, inspired by Alberto Arvelo Torrealba’s poem Florentino y el Diablo. At its core is a dramatic contrapunteo—a sung duel—between Florentino, a humble plainsman, and the Devil, who challenges him in a battle of wit, faith, and endurance.
Estévez transforms this story into a large-scale work for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, weaving together Venezuelan folk rhythms, traditional melodies, and expansive orchestral writing. The result is a work of striking intensity and color, grounded in heritage while resonating on a global stage.
