Canonmills Church Open House
About this Event
Our church has called Canonmills home since 1988, however our building has a rich history dating back many years prior.
In keeping with this year’s Doors Open Days theme ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’ we’ll explore the ways in which our historic building has changed purpose over the years.
Originally a two-room penny school where Robert Louis Stevenson (RLS) attended, his infant classroom (now our vestry) will be open to visitors. Here, the RLS Club will have a display and will be available with a wealth of information.
In later days, the building became a base and mission hall for the 46th Company Boys’ Brigade. The 46th Company was a part of the Boys' Brigade Edinburgh, Leith & District and grew to be the largest Company in the Edinburgh Battalion, under the Captaincy of Tom Curr. The 46th is known for its World War I and II rolls of honour.
Along with a photo exhibition on the 46th Boys’ Brigade, members of the disbanded 46th will be on hand to speak about their experiences in the Company.
Additionally, we’ve recently discovered an original Tom Curr painting which will be unveiled as part of our Doors Open Days event. Tom Curr was one of the most accomplished Scottish cartoonists and commercial artists - most notably known for drawing the kilted shot putter linked with Scottish Porridge Oats. Tom was a devout Christian, a deacon of our church, and highly involved in both his church and community.
Our Church Hall will host the Baptist History Project - complete with visual aids and artifacts - who can give enthralling accounts of the history of the church in Edinburgh, and would love to speak to visitors about their project. The extensive historic research they’ve been doing shows just how much is being done to preserve the history and heritage of churches like Canonmills.
Most recently, the building has served as our church home. We’re doing a lot of work with the community and as part of Doors Open Days we’ll be serving refreshments to our visitors who’d like to sit down with a cuppa and take it all in.
