About this Event
Two legends. Two boulevards. One neighborhood that carries their names.
Join the Illuminating Black History Project - presented by GrowHouse Design + Development Group - for an evening candlelight walk through the living landscape of Black Brooklyn.
On Wednesday, May 20th from 6:30β8:30 PM, we gather at dusk at Jackie Robinson Park Playground and move through the corridors of Bed-Stuy that bear the names of two of the most consequential Black thinkers of the 20th century: Malcolm X and Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
WHY MALCOLM & MARCUS?
Marcus Garvey built the largest Black mass movement in American history - preaching self-determination, Pan-African unity, and the radical idea that Black people deserved not just rights, but power. Malcolm X, raised on Garvey's legacy through his own parents' UNIA membership, carried that same fire into the mid-20th century - transforming it into a searing indictment of white supremacy, economic exploitation, and the limits of integration.
Two men. Two generations. One unbroken thread of Black radical thought and a neighborhood that named its boulevards after both of them.
This walk traces that thread.

ABOUT THE ILLUMINATING BLACK HISTORY PROJECT
The Illuminating Black History Project is an initiative of GrowHouse Community Design + Development Group, a Brooklyn-based organization anchored in Bed-Stuy. In June of this year, we'll unveil a lighting scuplture that will ensure that the people who built this neighborhood remain connected to its history and its future.
This walk is part of an ongoing series bringing Black history off the page and into the block.
