Cancer StrongHER Mahjong 101: Class 1 of 3 — August 26, 2026
About this Event
AUGUST 26 – SEPTEMBER 2 – SEPTEMBER 9
At Cancer StrongHER, we believe in exercising our brains as well as our bodies! Mahjong 101 is a three-session beginner series designed to introduce you to the fun, strategy, and social connection of American Mahjong. We’ll start with the fundamentals—learning the tiles, understanding the NMJL card, building hands, and reviewing the basic rules of play—before moving into the deal, the Charleston, and full rounds of supervised play. No previous experience is needed! Because each class builds upon the one before it, Session 1 is the most important to attend, and we strongly encourage registrants to commit to all three sessions for the best learning experience.
SESSION 1: MAHJONG FOUNDATIONS
We’ll begin with the essential building blocks of American Mahjong! Participants will learn the different tiles—including suits, flowers, winds, dragons, and jokers—and how to decode and understand hands on the NMJL card. We’ll practice tile combinations, begin building hands, and review the rules for calling tiles, using jokers, and playing with blanks. We’ll finish by playing a basic round of “Messy Mahjong” with open hands, with time for closed-hand play if time permits.
This is the most important session in the series, as Sessions 2 and 3 will build upon these skills.
