What is the Duduk?
The duduk is an ancient double-reed woodwind instrument, thought to be 4,000 years old, originating from the Caucasus region, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Türkiye. Over time, Armenia refined both the craftsmanship and playing techniques of the duduk, making it an integral part of the country's national identity. With its deeply soulful and expressive sound, the duduk has traditionally been played at funerals in Armenia, evoking a sense of mourning, grief and remembrance. In 2005, UNESCO recognized the Armenian duduk and its music as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
