Instrumental & horn-driven tunes tonight, featuring New Orleans styles ranging from Second Line to Rhythm & Blues to Jazz!
You are invited to a live performance showcasing the forthcoming album Canal Street Revolution by musician and composer Evan Oberla. The band features a multitude of New Orleans musicians, with mostly instrumental and horn-driven fare in a range of New Orleans music styles. (i.e. old-school New Orleans R&B meets New Orleans Jazz meets Brass Band tradition).
Evan Oberla is an artist, multi-instrumentalist musician & songwriter/composer based in New Orleans with a vibrantly resonant voice. His style is naturally dynamic arising from an intersection of melodious themes, rich harmonies and spontaneous improvisation, underpinned by a deep sense of rhythm complete with a soulful feeling. Throughout his career, this gifted performer has delved into many varied genres, honing a musical soup of influences into a distinctly unique yet joyfully familiar sound of his own.
Purpose: Canal Street Revolution (the album) is based on an oral history of Canal Street in New Orleans from the 1960s Civil Rights protests and beyond. This concept album features interviews from New Orleanian Culture Bearers expressing their experience of Canal Street over the years as it related to social and individual change. These stories are tied to the complex humanity and diverse range of emotions felt throughout the years in this unique place. With that viewpoint, the music written took on a full, rich expression of its own brought to life with a dynamic cast of musicians in the Crescent City.
The record plays as if you were walking down the street, hearing tales of empathy, determination, and dignity with a spotlight on understanding shared history.
Canal Street Revolution is past and present bound together with an artful connection to aid in shaping a clear vision for the future.
This will be the first live performance of this material.
