You are invited to a live performance showcasing the forthcoming album Canal Street Revolution by musician and composer Evan Oberla. The band features a multitude of New Orleans musicians, with mostly instrumental and horn-driven fare in a range of New Orleans music styles. (i.e. old-school New Orleans R&B meets New Orleans Jazz meets Brass Band tradition).
is an artist, multi-instrumentalist musician & songwriter/composer based in New Orleans with a vibrantly resonant voice. His style is naturally dynamic arising from an intersection of melodious themes, rich harmonies and spontaneous improvisation, underpinned by a deep sense of rhythm complete with a soulful feeling. Throughout his career, this gifted performer has delved into many varied genres, honing a musical soup of influences into a distinctly unique yet joyfully familiar sound of his own.
Purpose: Canal Street Revolution (the album) is based on an oral history of Canal Street in New Orleans from the 1960's Civil Rights sit-ins and beyond. This concept album features interviews from New Orleans' culture bearers expressing their experience of Canal Street over the years as it related to social and individual change.
With that viewpoint, the music written took on a full, rich story of its own brought to life with a supporting cast of fellow musicians in the Crescent City, from natives to locals that have made their home here. This project is the culmination of 4 years of work as these stories are tied to the complex humanity and diverse range of emotions felt throughout the years in this unique city.
The record plays as if you were just walking down Canal Street, hearing a story of determination and hope with a spotlight on understanding our city's past. Canal Street Revolution is a piece of history and an artful conduit for understanding from whence we came in order to have a clear vision of moving forward.
This will be the first live performance of this material.
