The Story of Morris Canal's Extension; Newark to the Hudson RiverGeography, economics, and politics all played a role in planning the route of the Morris Canal. However, it wasn't until the construction was well underway that it was determined the canal would need to carry on past its planned terminus on the Passaic River and gain access to New York Harbor. To do this, the canal would need to deal with two rivers, unfriendly geography, and finally, be embroiled in legal disputes and petty politics.
