About this Event
The Embassy of Italy in Canada, in collaboration with Carleton University, invites you to a special presentation by Italian writer and researcher Dr. Arianna Dagnino and Italian sociologist and photographer Dr. Stefano Gulmanelli, exploring the diverse fabric of contemporary Canada through the lens of direct encounter.
Retracing a 75-day, 21,000 km journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back, the speakers will present an illustrated talk titled Canadiensis: Meeting the People Who Make a Country. Drawing on field notes and conversations with artists, Indigenous elders, farmers and newcomers, Dr. Dagnino and Dr. Gulmanelli offer a grounded portrait of the country, reflecting on question of identity, belonging and solidarity across the vast Canadian landscape.
During the discussion, a photographic exhibition will be on display, featuring eight selected images captured by Dr. Gulmanelli during their journey.
The event will take place on May 5th, in Room TB 360, Tory Building, Carleton University from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Dr. Arianna Dagnino is a writer, journalist, and researcher at the University of British Columbia. Holding a PhD in Comparative Literature, her career across five continents has cultivated a transnational perspective on identity, migration, and cultural transformation. Her work explores the human stories within global shifts.

With a background in Economics and a PhD in Sociology, Dr. Stefano Gulmanelli has worked as a corporate manager, journalist, photographer, and academic across the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and North America. His experience informs an interdisciplinary practice that combines research, writing, and photography, bringing these perspectives together in his storytelling.
