  • 10:30am - 11:45am Masterclass

Repertoire: Finding Your Voice in Jazz Standards with Erin Propp

Based on the premise that music is a lifting thing, how do we choose repertoire? Understanding that we are all storytellers, where do we begin to find a story? This clinic will guide you through how to choose and learn a song, connecting you to your jazz repertoire in a personal way.

  • 12:30pm - 1:45pm Masterclass

Thoughts on Comping for the Aspiring Musician with Bryn Roberts

One of the most often overlooked (and under-practiced) skills of the rhythm section is the art of comping, or accompanying a soloist or vocalist. This class will highlight some of the basic and advanced ways we can develop our accompanying skills, including some examples of great comping, and some counterexamples of things that should be avoided.

  • 3:30pm - 4:45pm Masterclass

Three Ballads by Billy Strayhorn with Bryn Roberts

This class will focus on three of Billy Strayhorn’s most personal compositions, some familiar, some more obscure. Often overshadowed by Duke Ellington during his long association with the band, composer and arranger Strayhorn was responsible for much of Ellington’s most memorable music. We’ll take a deeper dive into some of the idiosyncrasies of Strayhorn’s melody, harmony, and use of form, and show why his music remains significant in the modern jazz canon.

  • 5:15pm - 7:00pm Open Rehearsal

Masterclass ticketholders are invited to watch a rehearsal for January 11’s wrap up concert

Saturday, February 11

Desautels Faculty of Music, Jazz Room T2-272

  • 10:30am - 11:45am Masterclass

Mental Skills For Performance with Marika Galea

This masterclass will explore what contemporary research tells us about musicians and how they experience mental barriers in practice, performance and improvisation. Participants will have an opportunity to explore concrete techniques for working through the challenges they are facing, and leave with ideas for further exploration.

  • 12:30pm - 1:45pm Masterclass

Applying the Jazz Skillset to a Broader Musical World with Bryn Roberts

Music students often feel a disconnect between what they learn in “jazz school” and the music they are actually interested in playing. Students in a jazz program in a college or university often wind up there because there isn’t another place for them to study the music they feel more connected to in an accredited institution. This seminar seeks to connect the dots between the skill set they’ll develop in their studies to a wider range of musical contexts.

  • 7:30pm - 9:30pm Concert

The Canadian Jazz Summit wraps with a final concert featuring the music of Bryn Roberts. The concert will feature a student ensemble and the U of M jazz faculty joined by Bryn.
