Join us as scouts of all levels work on their Camping 1 - Earth Award from the Camping Award series. Scouts earn the Camping Awards in order from 1 to 5 as they grow their experience and develop their skills in camping which includes hiking, safety, camp cooking, camp tools and knots, direction finding and outdoor exploration.
At our second meeting we will help scouts learn about staying safe while camping, including topics such as safe drinking water, first aid, outdoor hazards and identifying poisonous plants.
We will explore a few tools and make sure that scouts can help out with the cooking. Older scouts may have these down already but will need to demonstrate safe use and storage of both a can opener and a peeler. Scouts need to bring their own can opener and peeler that they are familiar with and will bring camping, a clean empty canned food can with only one end opened, as they will demonstrate use on the other end, AND bring a full size carrot that they can demonstrate peeling and enjoy as a snack when they are done.
Additionally, scouts will be introduced to direction finding with a map and compass at this meeting.
We will also be exploring leave no trace, finding out about minimum impact and playing a game to help us understand ecology.
All scouts, please use our meeting and activity calendar to RSVP for this meeting.
Youth interested in SpiralScouts are welcome to join us for this meeting. Please email [email protected] to find out details so you can join us.
