Running July 15-19, Camp ’Kenaz “is something we’ve been wanting to do for some time,” said Ashkenaz Executive Director Sarah Travis.
With its newly refurbished venue available during the daytime and an ongoing ambition to expand programming for children, there was an opportunity to pilot a camp building on Ashkenaz’s multicultural vision.
Partnering with Berkeley institutions, Ashkenaz aims to introduce children to a variety of art forms from around the world, including Brazilian dance classes at Bras Arte, folk music at The Freight & Salvage, performances of Balinese music and dance by Gamelan Sekar Jaya, drumming with DRUMMM Rhythmic Events, zydeco concerts, and tie-dyeing sessions set to Grateful Dead tunes at the home base.
Freight & Salvage’s summer Fiddle Kids program ended in 2021, which made the opportunity to create joint programming with other organizations particularly attractive. “We’re all excited about doing some interdisciplinary collaborations,” said PC Muñoz, the Freight’s director of education and community engagement. “I like the way they’ve imagined the camp to maximize the community aspect. Our lobby will have an exhibition about the Black Banjo Reclamation Project, so there’s some good timing.”
Ashkenaz is rolling out the camp as an experiment — there will just be 25 slots, 20 paid and 5 full scholarships — to gauge the level of interest. Other organizations have rented space to hold summer camps at Ashkenaz in the past, but this is the first one the music venue is hosting itself.
“We’d like to add more weeks, but we’ll see how it goes,” Travis said. “It would be great to have older kids, maybe even high schoolers, and also younger ones. Little kids can grasp rhythm and dance and crafts. It’s pretty accessible content.”
