About this Event
What do you know about Camotan Clinic? Would you like to learn more about how you can help?
Within Eastern Guatemala, the town of Camotan sits nestled at the base of the lush and rugged Sierra de la Minas mountain range. This area is home to thousands of indigenous people living in small villages and hamlets, connected along their scattered path by rough mountain roads. In a country where 80% of the population lives in poverty, Camotan municipality is particularly stricken by famine, drought, and harsh living conditions. The majority of the people here are of Mayan descent, living in thatched huts with dirt floors with their extended family, chickens, dogs and other livestock without access to running water or sanitation systems. They survive on beans and corn grown on small hillside plots, tended by family members while many of the men work far away on plantations for weeks or months at a time.
Malnutrition, communicable diseases, and polluted water make it hard for adults to live past 50, and child and infant mortality is high. Access to medical or dental care is difficult during the best times, and almost impossible during the rainy season, especially when few people have access to vehicles and the roads are steep and treacherous.
It is for this reason Camotan Clinic was founded- to provide care for those who have healthcare needs that cannot be met otherwise. For past 6 years Camotan Clinic has been open and operating with a full-time staff including local doctors, dentists, and nurses, as well as volunteers who travel to the clinic to bring supplies and provide their help. At Camotan Clinic, we also help identify medical needs that are unmet and cannot be treated locally and arrange services for individuals to receive care 5 hours away in Guatemala City, covering transportation, lodging, and medical costs for individuals in need. We provide food, nutritional supplements, vitamins to the poorest families and are working with other programs to provide water filtration systems to the mountain villages. There is so much more we can do for and with the people of Camotan, and a tremendous need for ongoing support in the area.
