A therapeutic backyard watercoloring course featuring healing music & adaptogenic drinks to achieve a relaxed body and calm state of mind.
About this Event

Therapeutic watercoloring techniques, healing sounds and adaptogenic drinks to achieve a relaxed body and calm state of mind in the relaxing lush backyard space of our Westside KC shop during evening golden hour.

We invite you to slow down with us and take a load off for a mid-week relaxation of the nervous system.

What you'll feel: This therapeutic art exercise will help you feel more calm and relaxed by using a fluid medium that helps us let go of the need to control, quiet the brain, switch on our senses, and get into a state of flow. Before we begin painting, I'll guide you into a state of mindfulness and calm as we become aware of our physical body/self through breathing techniques and light meditation. Part of this course it to practice non-judgment and acceptance. There is no right or wrong way to make art. We won't be working with particular forms or shapes here; we'll let go of that, letting paint do the work and simply focus on enjoying the process. When we let go of the need to impose form, our minds can relax more. Using the fluid medium of watercoloring, we stimulate our senses. As we watch the colors mix we might see a reflection of our inner feelings while stimulating the feeling of being soothed.

** Please note: The ultimate intention of this class is theraputic mind and body healing through fluid watercolor practices. If you're looking to practice or learn watercolor techniques, I host another class called Sustainable Watercoloring for Beginniners.

About the materials and the teacher:

We'll use paper waste, scrapped paint and even used paint brushes to make zero-waste simple modern watercolor prints that you can hang and frame and keep forever using theraputic color theory and brush techniques taught by Slow Motion Goods founder Hayley Besheer Santell.

With over 15 years of experience as a eco-conscious artist, Hayley began her career with a fine arts degree from Mizzou and has studied twice at Florence University of the Arts. Selected as one of the Kansas City Parade of Heart-ists, and commissioned for mural work all over the city, Hayley's portfolio includes the following mediums : watercolor, acrylic, oil, ink and is an ethical fashion designer full time for Slow Motion Goods.

In this workshop, you'll learn simple and relaxing watercolor techniques that will empower you with skills for a lifetime. In true Slow Motion Goods style, we will be working with paper waste, scrapped paints and even used paint brushes to make zero-waste modern watercolor prints that you can hang and frame and keep forever.

Hayley teaches two workshops - Healing Art Therapy (this class) and Sustainable Watercoloring for Beginners. This class is less about technique and more about slowing down the mind and the body. In the other, we'll learn watercoloring techniques and walk away with real scenery prints, cards and more that we can keep or gift. Feel free to join both workshops! We'll be painting in the open-air of our lush greenery-filled urban backyard at Slow Motion Goods.

What to expect:

6:30-7: Arrive, order your complimentary adaptogenic drink of choice (or water), browse clothing/music/art in our shop, use restroom and get settled outside

7-7:15: We'll begin with a guided breathing and sound meditation exercise in the backyard sitting atop blankets in the grass to center our spirits and calm our nervous system

7:15-8: We'll move from the ground to tables and chairs for the art therapy workshop

8-8:30ish: Leaving time to wrap up our art therapy practice without feeling rushed, we'll relax amongst the light of the sunset and fireflies and chirp of cicadas, savor the moment perhaps on our hammock, grab another drink, shop inside or simply enjoy the moment.
