About this Event

Yeu-Lai Mo’s practice is based in mixed media, installation, video and photography. Mo’s recent installation 'Upstairs', is a recreation of a shrine room that existed in above a Chinese Takeaway. Her family practiced Taoism and she recreated a large talisman made up of Fu sigils. These are lucky charms to ward off bad spirits or to seek good luck, peace and prosperity, especially at Lunar New Year.

For this workshop I will be sharing my banner and will introduce the basics of creating ‘Fu houses’ that make the framework of a talisman using a combination of Chinese calligraphy, pictograms and mark-making. In the workshop we will be using Chinese calligraphy brushes, Chinese inks, rice paper and other materials. Introducing basic art of Chinese Calligraphy.

This is an event for adults and/or families with children 11 years and over.

The places are limited for this workshop. If you need to cancel your booking, please do so as soon as possible so it can be allocated to someone else.

Please notice that this Library is no wheel chair accessible.

Artists Statement

Yeu-Lai Mo is a re-emerging artist identifying as British born Chinese, she has exhibited widely in the UK & China and graduated from Royal College of Art in 1997. She is currently a researcher at Goldsmiths University undertaking a practice-based PhD with chosen topic: ‘Archiving the British Chinese Artists Association and Chinese Art movement in London 1990’s’.

Mo’s artwork explores ideas of critical alternatives for the perception of the British Chinese. In her practice she has touched on issues of racism, prejudice, patriarchal stereotypes of East Asian women and made art using the language and paraphernalia of the fast-food industry. An element of performance prevails through her work, she uses photography, video, sound, and mixed media installation to create an immersive environment.
