About this Event

Call to Action- 100 Round Drum Circle

Come join us for an intergenerational youth and young adult led drum circle event at Howard University- School of Social Work MGC! Let's unite through the power of music and rhythm as we beat our drums in harmony. This is your chance to connect with like-minded individuals and share our collective voice, enjoy a relaxed and fun environment, meet new friends and connect with community members and organization as we work together to brainstorm ideas on how to tackle unrest such as gun violence in our communities using an intergenerational approach.. Don't miss out on this opportunity to be part of something special. See you there!

This is how it all began as the 100 Fathers Inc and Sounds of My People connected at the Howard University School of Socialwork under Dr. Robert Cosby, Director of the Howard University Multidisciplinary Gerontology Center to produce Healing the Soul of Our Community Conference on April 6,2024. This successful collaboration cosponsored by Dr Meyers and the Black Women for Positive Change started a new innovative community action that involved Youth Leadership from DMV including Howard University undergrads high-school students from Flowers High school, The Richard Wright PCS. This Collaboration also involved the White House Peace circles event Oct 17 th. This outstanding innovative collaboration is a meeting of great young minds and Academia to focus on the Month of Nonviolence and 13 committed years by the National Black Women for Positive Change 2024.

Why Depolarizing Conversations?

A "depolarizing conversation" refers to a dialogue aimed at reducing extreme positions or strong divisions on a topic, where individuals actively listen to opposing viewpoints, seek common ground, and prioritize understanding over persuasion, with the goal of bridging gaps and fostering constructive dialogue, especially when dealing with highly polarized issues.Key points about depolarizing conversations:

  • Focus on understanding:The primary goal is to deeply understand the other person's perspective, even if you disagree with it, rather than trying to "win" the argument.
  • Active listening:This involves paying close attention to what the other person is saying, asking clarifying questions, and reflecting back their key points to ensure accurate comprehension.
  • Empathy and respect:Approaching the conversation with empathy for the other person's experiences and viewpoints is crucial.
  • Identifying shared values:Looking for common ground and shared values that might exist even when there are major differences on specific issues.
  • Avoiding inflammatory language:Deliberately choosing language that is non-judgmental and does not escalate the conflict.

Where depolarizing conversations might be used:

  • Political discussions: Bridging divides between people with different political ideologies.
  • Social issues: Facilitating conversations around sensitive topics like race, gender, or climate change.
