About this Event
California History and Genealogy Workshop Series
Join us at the California Genealogical Society Library to learn about resources and strategies available to research early California settlers. Californianos were soldiers and settlers in Alta California from 1769 to California statehood September 9, 1850. Learn about the early history of California from the mission period (1769-1833) on.
Upcoming Workshop Series Dates:
June 8 - Jose Joaquin Moraga Family & the Rancho Laguna De Los Palos Colorados Grant; Presented by Kent Long.
Kent Long will be telling us about the history of the Moraga family, one of the prominent families in the Spanish and Mexican settlement of Alta California. Kent will also be highlighting the 1841 Moraga Adobe located in Orinda, California, which is the oldest surviving building in Contra Costa County.
In late 2008, the Adobe was sold for development, and the new owners invited local history groups to a tour of the building, which Kent attended. It turned out to be the start of an effort that is now in its 16th year, to preserve this historic adobe home. The non-profit Friends of the Joaquin Moraga Adobe was formed, and Kent has served as its president ever since. This year, the non-profit successfully completed the purchase of the property and restored building, and they are now preparing to open it to the public later this year.
Kent will tell us about the history of the Moraga family, the story of the Adobe building and his group’s work to save it, and the bright future ahead.
