⭐️Our Feature | MelVee X ⭐️
MelVee X is a triple threat - she's a spoken word poet, burlesque dancer and visual artist who's shared her work across Canada, aka Turtle Island, for the last nine years. She's a former Calgary Slam champion herself and the CEO of MVX STUDIOS - a visionary, multidisciplinary hub for bold and empowered artistic expression.
It is her practice to cultivate spaces for unapologetic storytelling from equity deserving, vulnerable and underserved communities - voices that have been deliberately and systematically silenced. MelVee’s work is rooted in her experiences as a mixed race neurodivergent Black queer working class woman who thrives at the intersections and implosions of multiple identities. In spite of all the contradictions, she makes the pieces fit.
The struggle is real and the resistance looks damn good.

📋 Sign Up System 📋
Due to the overwhelming response in people looking to share their poetry we have devised a new system in hopes of hearing all your voices.
No more lining up at 6:30pm to sign up! Doors will still open at 6:30pm. But sign up will be announced on mic on the stage at 7pm. Poets will come to the stage to sign up for either the open mic or the slam. You can only sign up for one or the other not both. There will be no cut off. All that want to sign up can. All names who want to do open mic will be put in a jug. 5 names will be pulled. Those 5 names will be our open mic poets. All the people who want to slam be put in a different jug. 12 names will be pulled from the jug. Those 12 people will enter the slam.
For all the people who's names DID NOT get pulled. Your names will be added twice to the following months slam.
Want to come watch and not perform? That's totally okay!
🎤Slam rules🎤
->Bring 3 poems, each 3 minutes or less. Depending on the number of slammers, the format of the slam will either be round robin, or 3 round elimination. The format of the slam will be decided on the night of by the Slam Master, and any adjustments to that format is at the discretion of the Slam Master.
->You do NOT have to have your poems memorized, and you may read from your phone or paper.
->Poems are scored by randomly selected audience members.
->This month is the annual ANARCHY SLAM meaning the usual rules are thrown out! Bring your props, wear costumes, play your guitar or ukulele or banjo or kazoo or backing beats for your raps!
