About this Event
Each session will consist of short poses (4-30 mins). A model will be hired for each session to dress in authentic Japanese kimono according to proper dressing conventions or kitsuke 着付け.
No instruction is given during these events. Drawing from life is not easy, but it is a fundamental skill for any artist to develop. Our sessions provide a rare opportunity to draw models wearing traditional Asian garments worn in respectful and authentic ways. By drawing these garments, we hope you can not only improve your skill as an artist but also learn more about Asian culture and history.
This year we are expanding the program to include other cultural garments from around Asia, including Chinese Hanfu and Indian Sari. The history of the kimono has been significantly influenced by other cultures, so we would like to include these garments to show how modern kimono are the product of cultural exchange and diversity.
This program was made possible thanks to the Calgary Nikkei Cultural Fund! Special thanks as well to the Calgary Japanese Community Association for allowing us to use their space for our event!
