Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg and was performing all over Europe by the age of four. His Missa brevis in F was the work of an 18-year-old. Mozart intended this mass for use in smaller church services, making it suitable for Sundays and special occasions at the Salzburg Cathedral. The work reflects his early style, showcasing his ability to blend vocal and instrumental elements effectively.
Born in Venice, Antonio Caldara (c. 1670–1736) was a prolific Italian composer of the late Baroque era, leaving an indelible mark on sacred music. His “Missa Dolorosa,” composed in the early 18th century and known for its poignant expressivity and sombre tone. The work is characterized by its sensitive treatment of the liturgical text, adept use of harmonic language and counterpoint, weaving moments of deep introspection with passages of fervent devotion. Caldara’s choral writing, supported by a rich orchestral tapestry, conveys a sense of spiritual contemplation and lamentation.
