Cal Poly Bandfest Concert
The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will continue the events season with works that show the wide breadth of sounds for concert band, including Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” from “The Planets,” Andrew Boysen’s Symphony No. 4, and Edwin Eugene Bagley’s “National Emblem March,” which John Philip Sousa said was the “finest march I didn’t write.”
Guest soloist Nick May will be featured with each of the groups: for Warren Benson’s Concertino for Alto Saxophone, and Tyler Harrison’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone. May made his solo debut at the age of 18 with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and has since established an international profile with performances in Denmark, Germany, Singapore, Sweden, and the U.S., including multiple solo appearances at Carnegie Hall.
The 200-member Mustang Band will close the concert with arrangements of popular music from this season’s field shows, with music of Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Chicago, Deep Purple, Elton John, Queen, the Scorpions, Shakira, and more.
The concert will be conducted by Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff and Associate Director of Bands Nicholas P. Waldron.
