The Cal Haines Trio, featuring Haines on drums, Terry Burns on bass, and John Funkhouser on piano, performs modern jazz, including reimagined standards as well as Burns’s and Funkhouser's expansive lyrical original music. As Haines describes, his low-key style of rhythmic and textural dimension charged with dynamics and intentional listenable space are complimented by Funkhouser’s deeply creative ideas and Burns’s bass love, all of which heighten the listening experience. In New Mexico speak, the trio likes to refer to themselves as “the whole enchilada”! Cal Haines has performed with Diahann Carroll, Bob Hope, Danny Thomas with the St Jude’s Telethon, Clark Terry, Yul Brenner in the “King and I” and with New Mexico luminaries, guitarist Michael Anthony and trumpeter Bobby Shew. The drummer for several NM Mexico Music award-winning groups including the Tribute Trio and Longshot Trio, Haines’ quartet – The Cal Haines Quartet - swept the jazz category in the 2023 NM Music Awards for Best Jazz CD, Best Jazz Performance and Best Jazz Composition. For the past 15 years, Haines has served as a mentor in Albuquerque and Santa Fe public schools and gives private lessons.
