Combining Africa Day and the International Day of the African Child celebrations, in 2024 the Cairns African Festival will be held at the WESTERN LAWN BY THE FERRIS WHEEL, the Esplanade.
The Cairns African Festival invites you to experience the spirit of Ubuntu, where the beat of the drum and the aroma of African street food create an atmosphere of joy and connection. Join us for a vibrant celebration of African culture featuring live entertainment, a free dancing workshop, African crafts, and product stalls, promising a day filled with rhythm, flavour, and discovery.
Headlining acts this year include:-
Waze Wakijiji - Led by Congolese singer Jack Manasi, Waze Wakijiji are a 7 piece Congolese Soukous Band with infectious guitar grooves based out of Brisbane.
Adama Doumbouya - Master of the Djembe (West African Drum) hailing from Ivory Coast. Adama will perform with local West African Drum Troupe Djansa and is also teaching the free drum workshops on the morning of the festival and the kids drum workshops in the days prior to the festival.
Disun Future - Ugandan Reggae/ Dancehall sensation, now based in Melbourne. Known for hits such as Mama Africa and Black Yellow Red, his is guaranteed to be a high energy, engaging performance.
Ben Jones - Raised in Cairns, now Brisbane based, Ben is a highly talented Kenyan Hip Hop/ Afrobeats artist who has accumulated over a million streams on Spotify.
Superboy - Our own hardworking Cairns Afrobeats star will be performing his many hits.
There will also be a talented spread of Local African Performers. These will include various community groups, performing dances and songs of Africa.
FREE CHILDRENS DRUM WORKSHOPS with Adama Doumbouya will be held over 3 afternoons in the week leading up to the festival. Children who participate in these workshops will have the opportunity to perform at the Festival with Adama.
2 FREE ADULT DRUM WORKSHOPS with Adama will also take place at Fogarty Park on the morning of the Festival, from 9:00am.
