Making Wine at Knossos: The Hellenistic and Roman Periods
In-person event at UCD Village Meeting Room 4
Hybrid - online on Zoom
Wine was a key element of Greek and Roman diet, economy, and culture. We know quite a lot about wine production, distribution and consumption in parts of Roman Italy, but until relatively recently, we had considerably less physical evidence available about wine production in ancient Greece. This paper explores evidence of wine production and transport at Knossos during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (2nd-1st centuries BC), and what this can tell us about natural resources, craft-production, connectivity, and societal changes related to the Roman conquest of Crete. This paper has developed from the author’s on-going archaeological fieldwork at the site of Knossos on Crete.
Dr Conor Trainor holds an Ad Astra Fellowship in the School of Classics at UCD. He has been involved in archaeological fieldwork on Hellenistic and Roman era cities in Greece since 2000. A specialist in ancient ceramics, cities, and economies, Conor has been working on several major projects at Knossos since 2013 and currently co-directs the Knossos Legacy And Sustainable Archaeology Project.
