Café Barock Universumissa: Roman upon a ground

The programme consists of flute sonatas by J. H. Roman (1694-1758) and “upon a ground” pieces.

Roman's flute sonatas were published in 1727 and are Roman’s only complete collection of pieces to appear in print during his lifetime. Stylistically they correspond to flute music by Händel and Telemann.

The ground pieces are from three different collections: John Walsh’s Division Flute Diego Ortiz’s Il trattado de glosas and Pièces de viole Livre II by Marin Marais. They are all diminutions on popular themes or tunes built upon an ostinato – a ground bass.
