The city is giving $500,000 to the Little Rock School District to turn Washington, Watson, Stephens, and Chicot Elementary Schools into "Community Schools." Community Schools are supposed to be community-led initiatives that integrate academics and social services with community development and engagement. Currently, there is little to no information available about where this money is going and how it will benefit our communities. Don't let "Community Schools" become another top-down, business-led initiative in Arkansas!This Saturday, Central Arkansas DSA will be partnering with Grassroots Arkansas, Arkansas Community Organizations, and The Village Place to canvass the neighborhood around Washington Elementary.
The only way to achieve the change we wish to see is by reaching out to our communities and ensuring that we as everyday people have a say in the decisions that affect our lives.
We will be meeting at Hair Plus Beauty Supply at 2403 Broadway at 2:00 PM Saturday. There will be a 30 minute training session at the beginning followed by an hour and a half canvass. No experience necessary! If you've never canvassed before, come on down and learn some new skills!
