Mayor Tom Arceneaux marked his first 100 days in office last month, after being sworn in as the Mayor of Shreveport on December 31, 2022. During this time, his administration has been marked by a series of successful initiatives aimed at improving the City's quality of life. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to public safety, economic development, and community engagement, setting the stage for a promising future for Shreveport.
One of the Mayor's notable achievements has been his emphasis on working collaboratively with state and federal law enforcement authorities to better anticipate where criminal activity is occurring, in order to thwart it, and to use that intelligence to more quickly identify the perpetrators and arrest those who are responsible right away.
Another notable accomplishment has been the Mayor’s focus on economic development. He has worked tirelessly to attract new businesses and promote job growth, working with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson about the possibility of his production company making movies and television shows in Shreveport. He has also re-started discussions with REV Entertainment, with the goal of a complete redevelopment of the Louisiana State Fair Grounds property.
Despite these successes, the Mayor faces several challenges in the remainder of his term as mayor. One of the most pressing issues is the need to address the city's budget deficit while minimizing cuts to essential services.
The Mayor must continue to seek creative solutions to generate revenue and ensure that vital services are maintained for residents as part of his 2024 budget proposal, while also finding a way for (what some would say is) a very fractured City Council to come together, and work together.
Also, compliance with the 2014 sewer system consent decree remains an uphill climb, but the Mayor is making progress in the negotiations with the U.S. Department of Justice and the EPA to obtain more time for the City and to avoid paying fines for non-compliance.
Another challenge facing the Mayor is the need to address the rise of violent crime in the city and this mostly includes developing a strategy for recruiting and retaining Police officers. The City simply cannot continue to lose more officers to retirement or resignation every year than it adds to the force.
Of course, there's lots to talk about, so, please join us on Tuesday, May 2 at Superior Grill, 6123 Line Avenue at 12 noon when Mayor Tom Arceneaux will be our guest speaker.
We look forward to seeing you!
